I was not in England when the Queen passed. I had left two days earlier for a necessary trip abroad, and as England pulled together to mourn, I found myself alone and very sad to be so far away. By the time I arrived back in the UK it felt like the world had moved on, but I had a lingering sadness and a need to express my respect for the Queen.
As I studied her life, I was struck by the speech she made to the world on her 21st birthday — "I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service … God help me to make good my vow." She was mature beyond her years.
This painting hopes to capture a contemplative moment in the last years of the Queen's life, reflecting on that promise made so many years ago, when she did not know how long she would live or what life would bring — and marvelling how God had indeed helped her keep it. Mixed media, charcoal and pencil, worked entirely in black and white except for the blue of her eyes.
